A Matching Set at 62? I Had to Rethink My First Impression
I was drawn to the colours. What surprised me was how easily I could make the whole outfit feel like me.
By the time I had changed my top for the third time, my coffee had gone cold. I was only going out for a casual catch-up in Melbourne, yet there I was, making a simple morning complicated.
At 62, I want clothes that give me room to breathe and still feel lovely to wear. Some days, though, my wardrobe seems to offer two choices: comfortable but a little plain, or pretty but more effort than I feel like making.
The Jacqueline two-piece set caught my attention because it looked like an outfit already figured out. Even so, I wondered about the printed pants. Would I actually wear them, or would they end up saved for an occasion that never came?
Why I took a second look
The olive colour was the first thing I noticed. Then it was the balance of the plain, flowing top and the leaf print underneath. There was enough detail to make it interesting without needing much else.
I liked the relaxed line of the pants and the room through the top. I did not want to feel squeezed into something, and I did not want an outfit that needed adjusting every time I sat down.
The fact that the pieces could be worn separately helped, too. The top could go with trousers I already owned. The printed pants could work with a simple neutral top. Suddenly, a matching set felt much less of a leap.
Unboxing my Mallee's Finest package
When I laid the two pieces out, I started with the top. The loose shape was what I had hoped for: something to fall over my middle without making that the focus of the outfit.
Then I added the pants and stood back from the mirror. The print gave the outfit a bit of life. With my usual sandals, it felt much more like something I would wear than something I had admired on a screen.
I had expected the matching pieces to feel rather formal. Instead, I could see how easily a simple bag and everyday jewellery would make the look my own.
Sizing tip: compare your measurements with the size guide, and if you are between sizes, size up. Sizes run from XS to 3XL.
A spring morning among the flowers
The flower market seemed like the right place to start. It was the sort of spring morning when you want to take your time, look at every bunch and come home with more flowers than you planned.
I kept the outfit simple: the Jacqueline set, flat sandals and a woven bag. The leaf print did most of the work, so I left the extra accessories at home.
I took a light cardigan along as well. Living in Melbourne has taught me to enjoy the sunshine without making too many assumptions about the afternoon.
An easy outfit for catching up with friends
For my next catch-up with friends, the decision was easier. I reached for the set, added a small necklace and was ready before I had time to start changing my mind.
Over coffee, I realised what I had wanted from my clothes all along. I wanted to feel dressed for the day and then get on with enjoying it. A relaxed top and coordinating pants made that feel wonderfully uncomplicated.
For a birthday lunch, I would swap the flats for low wedges. For an ordinary afternoon, I would leave everything just as it was.
Then I started looking at the other colours
The olive leaf print would still be my first choice, but looking through the other options gave me a few ideas. There are 15 colours and prints, including softer blues that I could picture wearing with neutral sandals.
I like having a familiar outfit in a different colour. It gives me a change without sending me back to the beginning of the what-goes-with-what question.

I do not need every morning to begin with a new outfit. I just like having an option that brings a little colour to the day and takes some of the thinking out of getting ready. Sometimes, that is enough reason to try something a little different.
